Settled in 1750, Cary became a rail junction in the 1850s. At that time, a post office was established, school and church property obtained and a town developed. Cary was incorporated into Wake County in 1871.

The original 1869 plan for the downtown village provided for a school and academy, establishing Cary as a center for education. Cary Academy, originally a private boarding school, became the first public high school in the state when the General Assembly passed a law in 1907 creating a system of state high schools.
