Situated at the heart of University of North Carolina (UNC) Chapel Hill campus stands “the Old Well,” so revered as the symbol of the university that it serves as the school’s official logo.
It is said that a drink from the Old Well on the first day of classes will bring good luck for the semester, and a final snapshot on graduation weekend will bring good luck forever – a tradition reinforced on every graduation/reunion weekend when the line for pictures often stretches down Cameron Avenue.
There is some question regarding the exact age of the Well, but it is widely accepted that it is at least as old as Old East dorm, which is the oldest public university building in the United States (dating from the 1790s).
In the early days of the university, the Old Well served as the sole water supply for Old East and Old West dormitories.
Recognizing the potential for architectural and aesthetic appeal, in the fall of 1897, UNC President Edwin A. Alderman ordered the Well undergo a “beautification project,” with the redesign of the site largely taken from the “Temple of Love in the Garden of Versailles.”
The UNC Class of 1954 later added the benches, brick walls, flower beds, and trees.
In 2001 a new UNC tradition was born, with the UNC football team beginning “Old Well Walk On” game days. During these games, approximately two and a half hours before kickoff, the team marches from the Old Well through Tar Heel Town and into the Kenan Football Center. The event is a crowd and fan favorite.
Today UNC’s Old Well is recognized as a National Landmark for Outstanding Landscape Architecture by the American Society of Landscape Architects.
