Established in 1859, High Point, NC, got its name from its status as the highest point on the North Carolina Railroad. While it may have begun its history as a railroad town, High Point quickly became known for its massive furniture industry. Things to Do in High Point
High Point residents enjoy a wealth of outdoor activities. One of the most popular recreation spots is High Point City Lake Park. This expansive park has a marina that rents fishing boats or visitors can bring their own and enjoy the beautiful, tree-lined view from the water. The park also contains a large pool complex complete with water slides. Children can enjoy attractions geared specifically to them, including a large playground and a carousel.
The High Point Museum aims to share the history of the High Point area through mostly donated items from Colonial times to present day. One of the main attractions at the museum is jazz legend John Coltrane’s piano, since Coltrane spent his childhood as a High Point resident. The museum also holds many family-friendly events throughout the year.
Enjoying High Point Barbeque
Like many other North Carolina cities, barbeque is king in High Point. The area is known for its Lexington-style barbeque, which is made with ketchup. Residents hail BBQ Joe’s Country Cooking as the best barbeque in town, but there are enough restaurants to make your own barbeque tour and decide for yourself.
High Point Neighborhoods
Uptowne High Point is High Point’s attempt at creating a new downtown. This exciting area has myriad dining and shopping options, as well as outdoor concerts and other entertainment events. One of the year’s most highly anticipated programs is the annual Holiday Stroll. This event features carolers, horse-drawn carriage rides, and merchants selling holiday wares. This area is being revitalized, and there are hopes that it will attract new condos in efforts to promote an urban living experience.
Oakview is home to many condos, apartments, and townhomes. Ranch homes with large yards can also be found in this neighborhood. Five Points has a variety of single family homes and touts its strong bond between businesses and residents. Fore newly constructed estate homes, Mendenhall Mill is your best bet. These stately homes contain upwards of five or six bedrooms and modern amenities.
Travel in High Point
The High Point Transit System gets commuters, High Point University students, and visitors around the city. This multifaceted system has a partnership with the Piedmont Authority for Regional Transportation and also offers complimentary ADA paratransit service. For further distances, High Point is home to an Amtrak station, and Piedmont Triad International Airport is only about 15 miles away.
